If you have special requirements, do get in touch and we can discuss having the meat butchered to your liking, e.g. larger joints for a special occasion, joints with bone left in, whole pig for a hog roast, etc.

HALF A FREE-RANGE PIG
£9 per kg

If you have plenty of space in your freezer, this box offers the best value for money, with approximately 20kg of boneless meat, including several packs of our very popular sausages. 

NB If you wish, we can cut your half pig according to your specific requirements. Please notify us of these at the time of ordering. Otherwise, you will receive approximately:

  • 6 leg joints

  • 6 belly joints

  • 6 shoulder joints

  • Boneless loin chops

  • Tenderloin

  • Ribs

  • Sausages (contain gluten)

RARE BREED PORK

Why Rare Breed?

The UK once had a large number of native breeds of pig. However, as the demand for factory-farmed, quick-growing and intensively-reared pig farming became greater, many of these fell out of favour. As a result, slower-growing pig breeds became less popular and numbers began to decline. Sadly, some breeds have died out altogether. However, the Rare Breed Survival Trust and British Pig Association have worked hard, alongside dedicated breeders, to reverse the decline in numbers and safeguard the future of these wonderful animals. By eating Rare Breed pork, you are supporting these breeding programs and helping to secure a positive future for our beautiful native pigs.

Why Slow-Grown and Outdoor?

Sadly, pigs are perhaps the species of livestock most open to abuse by intensive farming systems. Their adaptable nature has led them to be kept at indoor units in huge numbers.

Pigs are intelligent characters who love to be outdoors where they can exhibit natural piggy behaviours such as wallowing in muddy puddles - which helps keep them cool on hot days - and rooting in the ground to seek out tasty morsels.

When they are kept in circumstances which do not allow them to keep themselves entertained like this, they are prone to become bored. It is then that antisocial behaviours such as tail-biting and fighting can arise. In order to lessen the impact of these undesirable activities, intensive units will often dock piglets tails at birth so that they cannot be bitten, and even file down their teeth to prevent the pigs from harming one another.

In spacious outdoor systems, these aggressive behaviours are not an issue, so there is no need to carry out either of these dubious welfare procedures on our pigs.

In addition to outdoor pigs being happier, it is also true that the flavour of their meat is far superior to fast-finished indoor pigs as they have been fattened slowly and allowed to enjoy a good life, exhibiting natural behaviours and foraging outside for some of their food.

In addition to the natural diet of plants and bugs which they find as they go about their piggy days, our pigs are given a balanced pellet feed to ensure that all their nutritional needs are met.

Rearing outdoors also helps to avoid many of the diseases and illnesses associated with intensive pig-rearing, so our pigs do not receive any routine antibiotics or growth hormones. As we keep relatively small numbers, we are able to manage their needs on an individual basis, rather than having to batch-medicate the whole herd when one animal appears unwell, as with much larger systems.
